For more than twenty years, Parkland Performance Auto Machine in Tacoma, Washington has earned a reputation built on one core principle: getting the job done right. Co-owners Scott Johnston and Bill Hendrix have built a true performance-focused operation—blending extensive hands-on knowledge, engineering skill, and a deep passion for engines. Their dedication has made the shop a trusted name for enthusiasts nationwide, with customers spanning all 50 states and even countries as far away as Australia.

Scott’s career began after graduating from Denver Automotive & Diesel College in 1983. He spent many years in the trade before starting his own mobile repair business, RHP, in 1994—an important stepping stone toward what would eventually become his specialty. “I shifted into high-performance work in 2001,” Scott recalls. “I’ve always been a Ford fanatic – we’re fluent in everything from flathead V8s and small-blocks to FE and 429/460 big-block platforms.”

In 2017, Scott took his next major step by acquiring Parkland Auto Machine and partnering with Bill—an experienced machinist with a strong racing background and a lifelong passion for Chevrolet engines. Their combined strengths form a uniquely balanced team. “Bill handles our Coyote and LS work at Shop 1 along with classic Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Mopar engines, while I focus on Fords, airflow development, and tuning,” Scott says. “His racing experience and my performance background complement each other perfectly.”

Together, the pair have navigated some of the industry’s biggest challenges, from rising material costs to inconsistent parts quality. Yet their high standards and attention to detail continue to set them apart. “We’ve been dealing with cost spikes and quality issues for years, especially post COVID,” Scott explains. “But we’ve learned how to adapt – because at the end of the day, our customers expect excellence.”

Their accomplishments speak for themselves. In 2006, Scott, Bill, and their team earned a third-place overall finish at the nationwide Jegs Engine Masters Challenge, competing as Team Reincarnation. “That competition pushed us to another level,” Scott says. “It validated our approach and commitment to performance.”

The projects consistently reflect that same philosophy. “Our main focus is high horsepower, pump-gas-friendly combinations for the street,” Scott says. “Every build showcases our decades of refinement, especially the 429/460 platform, which we’ve been developing for over 20 years.”

Scott notes. “We’ve spent years identifying quality components and developing reliable break-in processes. Products from Driven have been crucial in getting that right.”
